across the pond

I invite you to join me in my adventures and discoveries as I serve for the Peace Corps in Cape Verde. I remind you (per order of the Peace Corps) that this website reflects my views alone and not those of the Peace Corps or the American government.

This photo is from this past weekend. We went to a festa to help finish a house. Our friends had been building a house for who knows how long, and they got the machine to lift the cement onto the roof, so everyone showed up to carry the rocks and sand and water to mix the cement and help finish the ceiling. The men carried the rocks and sand and cement. The women carried the water, on their heads, and we helped (we´re used to it, we need to carry our rain water into our house).

And, of course, the women also cooked, and cooked, and cooked. This is the row of wives and sisters and cousins and neighbors (there are more outside) that sat inside the smoke filled room to cook goat, chicken, rice and a corn dish that I forget the name of and probably couldn´t spell in the first place.......

This is the infamous volcano of Fogo. Pretty epic, huh? I took this photo from inside the crater, but I don´t think the picture really does it much justice.

This is the school where I teach. It is only a view from outside, but there´s not much more that you can´t see. There are 8 classrooms, a small library, and teachers room/office and a room where some women cook soup (it doesn´t seem fitting to call it a cafeteria). There is also a paved part outside with a miniature soccer "field" that is the only field within a 30-40 minute walk

This was written on the door of one of the rooms when we first went to check out the school. It is one of the 7th grade rooms, so I don´t have to look at it every day (that´s right, it´s still there), but we thought it was absolutely hilarious. Especially the blatant spelling error. Wellcome to teaching in Cape Verde! (it´s not hell, but it sure is hot!)
